For Locals, St. Helena Provides Far More than Just Wine Tasting Experiences

Explore Napa Valley beyond the glass! From hot air balloon rides and truffle hunting to vineyard yoga and boutique shopping, discover unique adventures and hidden gems that make the quaint town of St. Helena unforgettable.

Hello from wine country!

When you think of wine country, the image of swirling a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon in a sun-soaked vineyard may come to mind. But beyond the tasting rooms and vineyard tours, St. Helena offers a plethora of experiences that cater to all kinds of travelers, but for us locals, we've got our favorites, too.

Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a culinary explorer, or someone seeking a bit of adventure, there's much more to discover in wine country than just wine tasting experiences.

1. Culinary Adventures

Wine and food are inseparable, but wine country takes culinary experiences to another level. Sign up for a farm-to-table cooking class where you can learn to prepare gourmet meals using locally sourced ingredients. Many wineries also offer food and wine pairing dinners, where expert chefs and sommeliers collaborate to create unforgettable culinary experiences.

For something truly unique, consider a truffle hunting tour. Accompanied by trained dogs, you can wander through the countryside in search of these elusive delicacies. Afterward, enjoy a truffle-themed meal paired with the region's finest wines.

Local Insider's Tip

Gatehouse Restaurant, on the Culinary Institute of America’s historic St. Helena facility, is the capstone experience for CIA students after two years of rigorous culinary, baking and pastry, hospitality and beverage management instruction.

These future industry leaders transform the freshest regional ingredients, as well as those from CIA’s own herb gardens into creative contemporary dishes, served graciously in a refined yet casual dining room.

2. Hot Air Balloon Rides

Experience the breathtaking beauty of wine country from above with a hot air balloon ride. As the sun rises, you'll float gently over rolling vineyards, picturesque towns, and winding rivers. The tranquil silence and stunning vistas make for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

For us locals, you'll see these splendid displays of color in the sky and over the vineyards quite often in the filling our early morning vistas on the way to the office.

We recommend seeking out companies that offer a post-flight champagne breakfast, making the adventure even more memorable.

3. Wellness and Relaxation

If relaxation is what you're after, wine country won't disappoint. Indulge in a spa day at one of the region's luxurious resorts, where you can enjoy treatments that incorporate local ingredients like grape seeds and lavender. Yoga enthusiasts can partake in vineyard yoga sessions, where you can stretch and meditate amidst the vines.

For a more immersive experience, consider a wellness retreat. These retreats often combine yoga, meditation, and holistic therapies with the peaceful ambiance of wine country, providing the perfect setting to rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit.

4. Outdoor Adventures

Wine country is a paradise for outdoor lovers. Hiking trails wind through the region's scenic landscapes, offering routes for all levels of hikers. Explore the rugged terrain of nearby state parks, or take a leisurely stroll through vineyard-lined paths. Some areas also offer guided nature walks that highlight the local flora and fauna.

For those who prefer two wheels, cycling through wine country is a fantastic way to take in the scenery. Whether you choose a guided bike tour or set out on your own, you'll find routes that take you through charming villages, past historic landmarks, and alongside endless rows of grapevines.

Local Insider's Tip

If you are up for some serious mountain biking and you are in Napa Valley, seek out Moore Creek Park which is just north of Lake Hennessey off Highway 128. After an amazing day of biking, Nichelini Family Winery is just a few minutes up the road to raise a glass of wine at their historical winery to celebrate that epic ride.

5. Art and Culture

Wine country is not just about wine; it's also a hub for art and culture. Many towns are home to art galleries showcasing local and international artists. Take a leisurely afternoon to explore these galleries, or attend one of the many art festivals that occur throughout the year.

Music lovers can enjoy live performances ranging from classical concerts in vineyard settings to lively jazz festivals. For a more intimate experience, check out the local theater scene, where you can catch performances of both classic and contemporary plays.

Local Insider's Tip

Situated mid-valley in the historic town of Yountville, between St. Helena and Napa, the Napa Valley Museum Yountville is dedicated to enriching the cultural fabric of our community through exhibitions, collections, educational programs and creative activities that promote knowledge and understanding of art, nature and history.

6. Unique Shopping Experiences

Boutique shopping in wine country is a delightful experience- others may fancy binge shopping at the nearby factory stores. Our favorite is visiting the quaint towns speckled around wine country filled with artisanal shops offering everything from handcrafted jewelry to locally made home goods.

Don’t miss out on the chance to visit antique stores, where you can find unique treasures that reflect the history and character of the region.

For those with a passion for food, gourmet shops abound, offering local olive oils, cheeses, chocolates, and, of course, wine. Many of these items make perfect souvenirs or gifts to bring a piece of wine country back home with you.

For you guys out there that love old-school hardware stores, you'll want to visit Steve's Hardware in St. Helena, California. And then for some thrilling action walk next door to take your turn throwing axes at New West Knifeworks.

Now cross Main Street and drop into Pennyweight which is the perfect destination to stock up on fine stationary for the upcoming holiday season.

7. Historical Tours

Step back in time with a historical tour of wine country. Many regions have a rich history that dates back centuries, and you can explore this heritage through guided tours of historic estates, old town centers, and even former missions. Learn about the early settlers, the evolution of winemaking in the area, and how these regions became the wine powerhouses they are today.

Some tours also include visits to local museums that delve into the agricultural, cultural, and social history of the region. This is a great way to gain a deeper understanding of the land and the people who have shaped it.

Local Insider's Tip

Bale Grist Mill located just north of downtown St. Helena is the site of a water-powered grist mill that was built in 1846. It was once the center of social activity as Napa Valley settlers gathered to have their corn and wheat ground into meal or flour. The owner of the mill was Dr. Edward Turner Bale. He received the property in a land grant from the Mexican government and lived near the site until his death in 1849.

The mill remained in use until the early 1900s.The mill and its 36-foot water wheel are protected as a state historic landmark and have been partially restored. A trail connects the historic park to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. Additionally, the park includes the site of the first church in the Napa Valley as well as the Pioneer Cemetery.

8. Evening Events and Nightlife

When the sun sets, wine country comes alive with a variety of evening events. Attend a starlit concert at a vineyard, where you can enjoy live music under the stars with a glass of wine in hand. Many wineries also host outdoor movie nights, often accompanied by gourmet snacks and wine pairings.

For a more energetic night out, explore the local bar and music scene. Wine country towns often have a vibrant nightlife, with live music venues, cocktail bars, and even dance clubs where you can dance the night away.

9. Agritourism, Farmers Markets and Farm Visits

Get hands-on with agritourism experiences that allow you to connect with the land in a meaningful way. Visit working farms where you can pick your own produce, learn about sustainable farming practices, or even try your hand at harvesting grapes during the wine harvest season.

Many farms offer tours that include tastings of their products, such as cheese, olive oil, or honey. This is a fantastic way to see the connection between the land and the food on your plate while supporting local farmers.

Local Insider's Tip

Local farmers markets like the one in St. Helena provides the community with farm-fresh and sustainably grown produce, direct from the source. Also offering specialty foods and goods from local food purveyors and artisans. It takes place on Friday mornings at Crane Park, May through October.

You cannot leave St. Helena without heading on over to historic Napa Valley Olive Oil Company which is a local treasure filled with picnic-ready items and other provisions.

10. Wildlife Watching

Napa Valley is home to diverse wildlife, and there are plenty of opportunities to observe it in its natural habitat. Birdwatching is particularly popular out in Carneros and Lake Hennessey, with many species of birds making their home in the region's varied landscapes. Whether you're a seasoned birder or just starting out, you'll find plenty of spots to catch a glimpse of these feathered friends.
