Tips for the Perfect Wine Country Trip

To make the trip to wine country memorable, you need to enjoy it. Here's some of my tips on how to get the most out of your visit to wine country.

Plan Ahead
Wine country is a popular destination, especially during harvest season. Book your tastings and tours in advance to secure your spot at your desired wineries.

Pace Yourself
With so many wines to try, it’s important to pace yourself. Opt for a mix of tours and tastings spread throughout the day to fully enjoy each experience.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Well
Drink plenty of water and take advantage of the fantastic food offerings in wine country. Many wineries offer gourmet pairings that enhance the tasting experience.

Take Notes
With so many exceptional wines, it’s easy to forget which ones stood out. Take notes or snap photos of your favorites to remember your journey.

Enjoy the Scenery
Wine country is as much about the landscape as it is about the wine. Take time to soak in the beauty around you, whether it’s a vineyard vista or a charming wine country town.

Book Winery Tours in Advance
Napa Valley is renowned for its wineries, and many require reservations, especially the more popular ones. Plan your visits ahead and consider booking tours and tastings in advance to secure a spot at your preferred vineyards.

Explore Beyond the Main Road
While Highway 29 is the main artery through Napa Valley, don't miss out on the smaller, less-traveled roads like the Silverado Trail. These routes offer beautiful scenery and access to some hidden gem wineries that are less crowded.

Visit Early or Late in the Day
To avoid the crowds and have a more intimate experience, visit popular wineries early in the morning or later in the afternoon. You'll also get better lighting for photographs and might enjoy cooler temperatures depending on the season.

Take Advantage of Local Eats
Napa Valley is not just about wine; it’s also a foodie paradise. Visit local markets, food trucks, and smaller, family-owned restaurants to experience the region's fresh, farm-to-table cuisine. Don’t miss the Oxbow Public Market for a variety of local food vendors.

Explore Outdoor Activities
Napa Valley offers more than just wine tasting. Take some time to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking in the Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, biking through vineyard trails, or even a hot air balloon ride for a unique perspective of the valley. These activities provide a refreshing break from wine tasting and showcase the natural beauty of the area.

Here's my Top 5 Hidden Gems

When you come to Napa Valley, be sure to remember that it's not all about wine tastings and over-the-top culinary delights. As locals, we love the hidden gems and rustic experiences that make this valley special without breaking the bank.

Guigni's Deli in St. Helena
This charming, family-owned deli offers delicious sandwiches and Italian groceries. A local favorite for its authentic, homey atmosphere and friendly service. I still remember when sandwiches here were only $3.50, oh the good old days, but they are still totally delicious and a treat to visit! Oh, one more thing, definitely add the Guigni's Juice. You'll be glad you did!

For a giggle, notice the name of this company is spelled differently by checking out the sign on the front of the building versus the rear of the building.

Napa Valley Olive Oil Company
Located in St. Helena, this historic olive oil company dates back to 1931 and offers a variety of artisanal olive oils and other gourmet products. It's a great spot to sample and purchase high-quality olive oils and vinegars.

Di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art
Situated on over 200 acres of vineyards and natural landscape, Di Rosa offers a diverse collection of Northern California contemporary art. The scenic grounds and art installations provide a unique cultural experience.

Picnic at Lake Hennessey
I learned to sail on this lake way back in the day and makes for a perfect spot for a relaxing picnic. With picturesque views and calm waters, Lake Hennessey makes for a great escape from the busier tourist areas. If you want more amazing views, bring your hiking shoes or mountain bike and check out Moore Creek Park about a 1 mile further down Highway 128.

Historic Nichelini Winery is also about a 5-minute drive from here.

Picnic at Zinfandel Bridge
Nestled in a peaceful setting, this historic bridge offers a quaint location for a quiet picnic. The surrounding area is scenic and less crowded, providing a tranquil retreat. Simply head down the Silverado Trail just north of Rutherford, take a left and the bridge is about 500 yards down the Zinfandel Lane.

Park anywhere and you'll see a trail down to the river where you can relax around the waterfalls (best to see them before the end of June), but you can splish splash most of the summer in the natural pools.
