About Burgess Cellars

At almost 1000 feet far above the valley floor, a visit to Burgess Cellars starts with a panoramic view of Napa Valley. Family owned and crafting wines with mountain distinction since 1972, we look forward to sharing our story and wines with you.

Burgess Cellars has been family owned and creating wines with mountain distinction since 1972 on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley.

When our founder Tom Burgess purchased the 1870’s era winery in 1972 he established himself as a pioneer of mountain side wineries. At the time, there were only approximately 2 dozen wineries in operation in the whole of Napa Valley and he saw the potential of mountain vineyards to produce wines that evoke the French concept of terroir: that the grapes, and thus wines, should reflect the vineyard’s soil, exposure, and overall micro-climate.

Today, the second generation is building on Tom’s legacy. Brothers Steven Burgess and James Burgess took over as President and Vineyard Manager respectively. In 2013, Winemaker Kelly Woods, a UC Davis graduate, completed the new team, and together the trio has fined-tuned the vineyards and cellar to highlight mountain grapes. The new direction of the estate is taking Burgess Cellars to the pinnacle of Napa Valley wine quality.

At almost 1000 feet, far over the valley floor, we produce wines from our two estate hillside vineyards, Winery Ranch Vineyard and Haymaker Vineyard. Our hillside grapes tend to be smaller, with more concentrated flavors and tannins, varietal intensity and excellent aging properties.

A visit to Burgess Cellars begins with a panoramic vista that offers real perspective on the Napa Valley. One can see the length of the Mayacamas range, from Calistoga to the hills beyond Napa. We present our wines in our cellar, where you are surrounded by barrels. Please contact us to make a reservation. Tastings are by appointment only.

We first walked on the deck outside and couldn’t imagine how they harvested the hilly vines for the grapes! Once inside the tasting room , it was small and quaint and personal. Our tasting host was friendly, knowledgeable and made the experience enjoyable.

We were happy you had a sign that said your winery was coming up or we may have missed the driveway. Your view is amazing and your location is fabulous. What a great place! We thoroughly enjoyed our tasting and Larry was a very attentive server. We probably drank too much but your wine was very good-- just the way we like our reds.

What a great experience. Our host was exceptional. I brought two first time Napa visitors and novices as far as wine experience. She made them feel like they were the only two in the tasting room and answered all there questions with ease and still with so much knowledge. I will bring more friends with experiences like this. Thank you Cindy. The Taos Stick approves!

Our experience was very lovely. The hospitality representative was very friendly, and knowledgable. My rating for ambience was such because our host touched on how outdated the tasting space was beforehand, and how it had modernized, however, I felt like it was still outdated. The view is phenomenal, but I did not feel like the room we were in capitalized on that. It was also a little cramped.

Great, relaxed tasting! The mountainside setting has breathtaking views, and the wines are even more impressive, with silky flavors and deep, concentrated mountain fruit. Learning the history of the Burgess family was fascinating. The winery also has an extensive collection of library wines. Highly recommended!

Several blended and single varietal wines were poured. I walked away with a Petit Verdot, Petit Syrah and a single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. I wanted one of everything though. It was obvious my host loves what he does. I highly recommend you give them a try!

This is a great addition for a Napa wine tasting. We did the cellar tasting and were greeted outside overlooking the Howell Mountain property with a glass of chardonnay. The tasting contiues with reds in the cellar amoung the wine barrels. This is a unique tasting experience because you get to try 100% single varietals which are normally blended. Water and breadsticks provided.

We've always liked finding smaller, more hospitable but DELICIOUS wineries.. This placed NAILED it! Awesome people, knowledgable, and when our guide said "she doesn't make any bad or so-so wines", I thought 'sure, but they all say that'. I swear he was spot on! EVERY.SINGLE.ONE. We don't join many clubs, but no way were we going without joining. Shipping included? SOLD! Hard part was which ones!

The breathtaking views from the winding road and winery's hilltop perch continued inside to the tasting room, where we were warmly greeted by Elizabeth, our guide for the afternoon. Ms. Miller shared interesting stories of Tom Burgess as he built one of the older wineries in the Valley and his sons as they pursue the next chapter in wine making. We were very fortunate to be guided brilliantly by Elizabeth's oenology expertise as she led us through flights intended to not only delight, but to inform, Elizabeth encouraged exchange of impressions and dialog among the guests at the tasting. A delightful afternoon. Not only were the wines delicious (we could not help but join the wine club and look forward to our first shipment) but feel we had attended a seminar on wine.

The tasting started outside overlooking a gorgeous valley with a Chardonnay, then we might need into a brightly lit room with an uninterrupted view of the scenery. We went to several reds, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, which were all fantastic. I enjoyed the wine and the experience so much I actually joined their wine club.

Great people, great wine, great time! I could have gone to any vineyard, but only had time for one stop on this trip. Burgess was our 1st choice!

Burgess Cellars is a smaller family vineyard in a beautiful location. The staff is knowledgeable and engaging. The wines were delicious and of good value and we joined the wine club to be able to enjoy in the future. We asked for a recommendation to another vineyard and the host accommodated with a another outstanding vineyard that is close by.

Excellent service, just a little disappointed that we would have loved to see more of the process. For example give the introductory Chardonnay and walk us through were the barrels are tell us about the aging or how it is sample by the winemaker. Then show us the view and last sit us down to the tasting. Just a little more personal touch for a private tasting since it is by appointment.

Beautiful winery set on a hillside with magnificent views. Super friendly staff, delicious wines.
