About Burgess Cellars

At almost 1000 feet far above the valley floor, a visit to Burgess Cellars starts with a panoramic view of Napa Valley. Family owned and crafting wines with mountain distinction since 1972, we look forward to sharing our story and wines with you.

Burgess Cellars has been family owned and creating wines with mountain distinction since 1972 on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley.

When our founder Tom Burgess purchased the 1870’s era winery in 1972 he established himself as a pioneer of mountain side wineries. At the time, there were only approximately 2 dozen wineries in operation in the whole of Napa Valley and he saw the potential of mountain vineyards to produce wines that evoke the French concept of terroir: that the grapes, and thus wines, should reflect the vineyard’s soil, exposure, and overall micro-climate.

Today, the second generation is building on Tom’s legacy. Brothers Steven Burgess and James Burgess took over as President and Vineyard Manager respectively. In 2013, Winemaker Kelly Woods, a UC Davis graduate, completed the new team, and together the trio has fined-tuned the vineyards and cellar to highlight mountain grapes. The new direction of the estate is taking Burgess Cellars to the pinnacle of Napa Valley wine quality.

At almost 1000 feet, far over the valley floor, we produce wines from our two estate hillside vineyards, Winery Ranch Vineyard and Haymaker Vineyard. Our hillside grapes tend to be smaller, with more concentrated flavors and tannins, varietal intensity and excellent aging properties.

A visit to Burgess Cellars begins with a panoramic vista that offers real perspective on the Napa Valley. One can see the length of the Mayacamas range, from Calistoga to the hills beyond Napa. We present our wines in our cellar, where you are surrounded by barrels. Tastings are by appointment only.

*This is an active working winery. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND NOT BRINGING CHILDREN TO OUR PROPERTY. Pets are not permitted.

Wonderful to see that a slice of the old Napa valley still exists. A family that still farms the land, makes the wine, and appreciates the customer. Our tasting was led by a knowledgeable sommelier, while owner Steve Burgess made the rounds and offered insight and answered questions. An A+ stop for those wanting to escape the hwy 29 jam.

When we pulled up we were greeted with an amazing view of the valley! Marvin and Steve himself joined us in telling of the winery’s history and processes and made the whole experience enjoyable even for a first timer in our group. The wines were yummy and the food pairing they suggested sounded so great we just had to take some home to try ourselves. Thank you!

The host was a bit flustered, running behind schedule a bit, but offered us a sip of wine while she set up for our tasting - we were with a few others so a group of 10 tasting at the bar. The host talked nonstop but did not do a good job of explaining what we were tasting. I wanted to learn why one of their wines was $144 per bottle. Overall a rushed and non satisfying experience.

I would recommend this visit to anyone who enjoys good wine and a beautiful vista. Elizabeth was leading our tasting and did a wonderful job - it was relaxed and informative - in our group of 8, many of the people had a good knowledge of the many aspects of the wine business and she was able to answer all of their questions and put the information in a way the more novice could understand

Our appointment was at 11:30 and we arrived a little early-gave us time to hit the restroom and look at the stuff on the wall. There was another group that was also supposed to be there with us though we didn't know them at the same time. they were late so he started without them. At least he didn't make us wait that was nice. He gave us a wonderful history of the winery.

Breathtaking views over the valley with incredible wines to match. Extremely cordial and hospitable. Took extra time to explain the history of the winery with in depth description of each wine. Offered additional tastings of wines not on the tasting menu. The library collection is phenomenal and well priced . '91 Cab (sons birth year) to be opened at his wedding this spring

We were happy you had a sign that said your winery was coming up or we may have missed the driveway. Your view is amazing and your location is fabulous. What a great place! We thoroughly enjoyed our tasting and Larry was a very attentive server. We probably drank too much but your wine was very good-- just the way we like our reds.

She made them feel like they were the only two in the tasting room and answered all there questions with ease and still with so much knowledge. I will bring more friends with experiences like this. Our experience was very lovely. The hospitality representative was very friendly, and knowledgable. My rating for ambience was such because our host touched on how outdated the tasting space was beforehand, and how it had modernized, however, I felt like it was still outdated. The view is phenomenal, but I did not feel like the room we were in capitalized on that. It was also a little cramped.

This is a great addition for a Napa wine tasting. We did the cellar tasting and were greeted outside overlooking the Howell Mountain property with a glass of chardonnay. The tasting contiues with reds in the cellar amoung the wine barrels. This is a unique tasting experience because you get to try 100% single varietals which are normally blended. Water and breadsticks provided.

The breathtaking views from the winding road and winery's hilltop perch continued inside to the tasting room, where we were warmly greeted by Elizabeth, our guide for the afternoon. Ms. Miller shared interesting stories of Tom Burgess as he built one of the older wineries in the Valley and his sons as they pursue the next chapter in wine making. We were very fortunate to be guided brilliantly by Elizabeth's oenology expertise as she led us through flights intended to not only delight, but to inform, Elizabeth encouraged exchange of impressions and dialog among the guests at the tasting. A delightful afternoon. Not only were the wines delicious (we could not help but join the wine club and look forward to our first shipment) but feel we had attended a seminar on wine.
